The Cancer Full Moon at the Solstice last week gave us a powerful assist to acknowledge our feelings at the celebratory year-end of the esoteric world. The modern world’s calendar year-end this week reiterates the theme of acknowledging the potent transition moments between cycles. We can all relate to another year coming to an end. How we handle it gives us a good indication of how we are handling cycle shifts in general. Myriad feelings can arise at moments of endings and beginnings. We may be fully ready to let go of the past and start afresh with something new. But there also could be feelings we need to work through such as grief, a sense of loss, or anxiety producing fear due to uncertainty of what is to come.

The few aspects unfolding this week will focus us on the archetypes that can best see us through this time. Venus in Scorpio forms a sextile to Pluto in Capricorn on December 28. This suggests that being as authentic as we can be with others is vitally important going forward into the New Year. Knowing who we are in relationship to other will give us clarity on who best supports our purpose and who seems to divert us from our path. Venus is in the sign ruled by Pluto and this increases the intensity of the need to merge with others in heart, mind or body. It is therefore important maintain the ability to pull back from being totally immersed so we can see our relationships from a non-identified perspective. In Capricorn, Pluto’s influence on Venus focuses on how relationships are structured and if they are operating in a way that provides the best opportunities for balanced interaction. Pluto is the planet that rules death and rebirth, another magical borderland of endings and beginnings. As it syncs up with Venus at this time, we may sense a deep current of awareness of the need to die to one’s self in order to experience the selfless power of true love.

On New Year’s Eve, December 31, Mars leaves Pisces, the last sign of the Zodiac, and begins a new two-year cycle at the significant 0°Aries point. This indicates we may feel much more bold and confident about venturing forth into the New Year, come what may, and be ready to act spontaneously on ideas coming in at this time. We may palpably feel this shift from an emotional mutable water sign to an inspirational cardinal fire sign. Aries symbolizes the initial act of creation that brings forth life. Mars in its home sign of Aries acts with forthright directness as a pioneering spirit that calls us to go forth and create. The challenge here is to have awareness of the impact our creations, as well as our actions that bring them to life, have on others. Taking unnecessary risks or being cavalierly unconcerned for preserving our creations for the benefit of all indicates a state of selfishness separated from the power of love. When we honor our connections with others, this force of creation within each of us has the power to be sustained over time.

The Sun’s annual conjunction with Saturn in Capricorn on New Year’s Day, January 1, 2019 suggests the need to make each moment count as we go forward into the unknown of the New Year. Things get serious when the Saturn archetype is magnified and its reckoning force will grow stronger as it traverses its home sign throughout 2019. Whatever challenges we face may get very real for us. There are plenty of crises around the world that require attention and as a collective we will have our opportunities to address them, but the movement towards solving them starts within. The Sun represents our will and purpose; Saturn represents integrity and manifestation. Uniting at this time, they call us to take full responsibility for the life we are leading in this material reality. This requires a paring down process to let go of all that is unnecessary, beginning with our thoughts. Only by eliminating the distractions of the comforts and precious things that seem to fill a void within, can we clearly see the reality of our life. Sadness and grief are often associated with Saturn and Capricorn because of their contractive nature that requires us to make the hard choices in life, simply because we resist the process. But if we accept it with grace and work to strengthen the structures that support our life’s purpose we can have an uplifting experience that is quite liberating. As we go forward into the New Year, may we choose to fulfill the responsibilities of our life with gladness and call on our power to manifest the integrity of spirit in every moment.
