The things to do are the things that need doing, that you see need to be done, and that no one else seems to see need to be done. Then you will conceive your own way of doing that which needs to be done – that no one else has told you to do or how to do it. This will bring out the real you that often gets buried inside a character that has acquired a superficial array of behaviors induced or imposed by others on the individual. – Buckminster Fuller
We are within sight of a major humanitarian crossroads and as the junction nears we must contemplate our choices. As is typical with human nature, things often have to get pretty bad for us to decisively act, and collectively we won’t do so until we hit critical mass. Although the “dance of extremes” between Jupiter in Libra and Uranus in Aries is over (see last AstroCast), the wake of their opposition continues to swell. Similarly, the aftershock of the square between Uranus in Aries and Pluto in Capricorn (2012-2015) is still actively unearthing representations of the dysfunctional fissures in our collective psyche. Considering both aspects feature Uranus, it is apropos that our experience of this decade has largely been “shocking,” “unprecedented,” “groundbreaking,” etc. These unstable, extraordinary times are interrupting normal patterns and significant change seems to greet us every morning. A recent NPR report addressed the repercussions of the three devastating hurricanes that struck the U.S. concurrently with other major disasters around the world. Several leaders of various relief agencies were all saying this “unprecedented” surge in catastrophic events is straining their staff and resources “to the breaking point,” and that if basic needs are not met in places like Puerto Rico, “what will be happening over the next few months could be a really frightening situation.”
So what does this mean for us? The symbolic movements of the cosmos certainly correlate to disruptive events occurring on the world stage and in our personal lives, but they also point to solutions. This week, both the Aries Full Moon opposite the Sun in Libra on October 5, and the Superior Conjunction of the Sun and Mercury in Libra on October 8 evoke the same imperative for us to remember that we are connected and that when we serve others we serve ourselves. In his most recent Blog Post, Jim Sher wrote, “We may be on the verge of seeing our world in a radically new way, and all of it is leading us toward the experience of a new state, which is a state of ‘Unity.’” The conjunction of Venus and Mars in Virgo on October 5 additionally supports the emphasis on service as well as unity. As the archetypal lovers of the sky unite under the Full Moon, the culmination point of the current lunar cycle that began with the service-oriented New Moon in Virgo, and the Superior Conjunction, representing the relationship between heart (Sun) and mind (Mercury), we may logically ask ourselves, however, how can we be of service in a world of overwhelming need and still take care of ourselves? And what does that have to do with Unity?
Mars, ruler of Aries, represents focus on self and its natural opposite on the zodiacal wheel and ruler of Libra, Venus, represents focus on other. With Mars and Venus as the “go to” voices for the Full Moon, and the Superior Conjunction dependent on Venus as its final dispositor for guidance, this planetary pair uniting as one may lead us to answers that follow the philosophy of Bucky Fuller, architect, inventor and author of Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth (with natal Venus in Virgo and a prominent Uranus), which is if you see a need fill it in the way that only you can. Just look around with heartfelt attentiveness to see where you can be of service. It doesn’t have to be directly related to disaster relief – ANY real need that is recognized and fulfilled represents a spiritual movement towards Unity. That is the long game here on spaceship earth. If you are doing that, it also means your own needs will be taken care of. This is the law and magic of aligning with the state of Unity. No need to fall into a classic Virgo state of worry about it. According to Sher, the state of Unity is an evolutionary force that “propels us away from divisiveness, disorder, confusion and high entropy and as it ‘awakens’ in us, we can “cooperate with this force, align with it more and more, and truly discover that our very ‘being’ transforms the more we do this. Love begets Love.”
Supporting this compassionate mission, the loving Venus and Mars conjunction trines Pluto in Capricorn and squares Saturn in Sagittarius (October 3 – 8). The symbolic feminine and masculine principles tapping into Pluto’s deep source of power can have the effect of intensifying relationships while also boosting one’s determination and stamina to remain fully present with them. The square to Saturn can correlate to a challenge to be realistic about one’s limitations in reliably fulfilling the needs of the relationships. Pluto reveals core issues blocking the authentic self and compels us to face Saturn’s feedback on choices made as well as its demand to take responsibility for them. This is the necessary part of growing and evolving on a spiritual path that ultimately leads to a more loving experience of life.
Both the Full Moon and the Superior Conjunction are square to Pluto October 5 – 9, indicating the movement toward Unity may encounter fierce resistance. In more unconscious minds, Pluto manifests in acts of manipulation and control, which can correlate to intensified battles in our divisive political climate. The president’s tweets may continue to deliver personal attacks intended to discredit, but as the NFL players’ protests against racial injustice continue, as the situation in Puerto Rico becomes more grim, as the war of words with North Korea intensifies possibly to something more real, or as any other similar battle between the forces of chaos and order unfold, Newton’s third law will certainly be present and an equal but opposite reaction to chaos will arise as a forceful movement towards the state of Unity.
