The Power of the Super Moon

There is much talk going around astrological circles about what the astrologer, Richard Nolle, called a Super Moon. This phenomenon occurs when the Moon is closest to the earth and therefore is said to have much bigger effects than normal. In fact, in this case, the Moon hasn’t been this close to the Earth in 18 years. What makes this Super Moon even stronger is the fact that it is occurring at the same time as the Full Moon on Saturday, March 19, 2011 at 11:10am PDT. It can be expected to intensify the ‘Super Moon’ effect even further. I am not an expert on this topic, but it is impossible not to ignore the obvious effects we are seeing already. Long before the earthquake in Japan happened, the Super Moon was described as increasing the likelihood of earthquakes, tsunamis and explosions, but now we see it right before our eyes. The Japan earthquake of March 11th was the 5th strongest earthquake since records began being kept over 100 years ago and was a 9.0 on the Richter scale. It has already been discovered as causing the earth to spin faster as it has shortened the day by 1.6 microseconds and also shifted the Earth’s axis while moving Japan itself by 2.4 meters. We are still unsure of where we stand at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, as the World hopes a total nuclear meltdown can be avoided. We are also seeing other events that are highly intense right now, including the revolution in Libya with its resulting violence and the unusually heightened tension in the states of Wisconsin and Michigan.

Under normal conditions, this Full Moon would still have been powerful as the Sun at 28° of Pisces is also conjunct Uranus at 0° Aries. Uranus is extremely strong right now as it just entered Aries and in my opinion marks the true beginning of the coming Uranus square to Pluto that fully engages us in 2012. So, let’s go into this more.

Uranus rules sudden change, unexpected events, and shocks that surprise us as they seem to come from nowhere. But to this writer, these descriptions seem so random that it suggests there is no underlying purpose, message, or value to what Uranus is bringing about. Science tells us that we live in a meaningless, soulless, random Universe where things just happen. This is where astrology offers a very different view. As random as events can appear when Uranus is active, it governs the process of independence and freedom. Also, it asks us to be authentic, and not shy away from being who we are. It will lead us to new discoveries and new ways of thinking. But the most important thing is that the shocks it brings to us are for a purpose. It will force us to take a really new look at something. The truth is that most of the time we live in varying states of inertia when we resist change and new ways of examining issues in our lives. When Uranus is activated, it will destroy whatever is in the way of these resistances and other defensive reactions.

A great many students and clients right now are telling me that they are processing a lot that has to do with this theme. Some are having to push themselves to speak truthfully to ‘authority’ figures that they have let overpower them. They are finding that they can no longer allow this to continue as the urge or need to ‘tell it like it is’ is too strong to ignore.

Uranus is very strong right now as it has just entered Aries and is on what is called in Uranian astrology, the World Point. 0° of any cardinal sign (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) is a highly significant degree because it marks the beginning of a new cycle that is fundamentally different than the previous one. Also, it connects us to the World, making us more aware of what the rest of the World is going through. We are more sensitive to the fact that we are all a part of the entire World. It is at times like this that we can recognize and become aware that we are all citizens of this planet. Parochialism is not the way to go, in my opinion. This is certainly happening right now as the entire world’s attention is focused on what is happening in Japan. Also, there is a meeting this Thursday in the United Nations where a vote will be taken on whether to establish a ‘no-fly’ zone over Libya to prevent Gaddafi from killing citizens of Benghazi, who he called “traitors” today. While the U.S. will be the nation to enforce this, Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, has stated that the U.S. will not act without this U.N. resolution. Again we see that the entire World is being forced to engage in the forces and severe events we are experiencing right now.

As you can see, we are already feeling the effects of the Full Moon/Super Moon strongly and it is likely to become much tenser during the next two weeks as the developments of the Full Moon reverberate throughout the World.

This means that individuals affected by these transits may also be going through very significant changes and are feeling the need to find ways to grow. This is a time when it is important to act on what one is feeling. Otherwise, if the energy is not acted upon it can lead to great frustration if the person doesn’t find a way to relive the pressures that are building. The tension needs to be broken now, so it is advisable to find a way to do this in advance, before the tension becomes so great that the only relief possible comes from an explosive crisis.

I will be devoting several upcoming articles on the nature of the coming Uranus square to Pluto as it is likely going to affect us enormously over the next several years. I can say that this will reinvigorate the process we called “the 60’s” which is when the conjunction between these two planets formed. It is a very revolutionary time and will call for new paradigms in all areas of human concern, just as the 60’s did. But this time, since it is happening in a square aspect, there may be more potential for more passion and even violence than we had then.

As always, I would like to encourage my readers to reply to this article and share how you are experiencing this Super Moon.

Thanks for your astrological insights once again. Things are definitely speeding up….it really feels like a pressure cooker. It is becoming more and more real how much each and every one of us depends on each other for survival. I try to remember that photograph of the earth from outer space…( I think an astronaut shot it).
What has really struck me in my own life is how I am really learning and practicing living in the now…I’m grateful for the richness of the experience. I’m risking myself emotionally as never before and deciding to go for things that I held myself back from….I’m accepting amd understanding myself more and am more in touch with my real self.

I forwarded your column to my son, born Sept. 23, 1966 with Venus, Pluto and Uranus conjunct at 18-20 degrees Virgo. Since his Sun is less than 1 degree Libra, being opposed by transiting Uranus, he is feeling the pressure of these aspects greatly, wishing he could join an incendiary group of some kind and changes things radically in U.S. politics.

Jim, thank you for the article. Since the earthquake/tsunami I have been waiting eagerly for your words. It all makes so much sense. I am more aware than ever of the global connection we have. Also, noticing the complacency of people around me and how it is so easy to slide back into it myself. My general feeling last week was agitation, worry and sorrow. It has changed to compassion and preparedness-being Awake Aware and Alert. Since taking care of the practical aspect, I am ready to roll with whatever happens. The last few weeks I have been painting on large canvases. It feels best for letting out the pent-up emotions I am feeling from the world and myself. It also has unleashed new ways of looking and thinking!

    To Linda:

Sorry for leaving the details out. This Full moon will have the Sun at 28° of Pisces in opposition to the Moon at 28° Virgo. Hope this information helps. Thanks for your reply.

Dear Jim, I get a lot of value from your newsletters. Thank you. I notice you rarely mention what sign the moon is in when you talk about the full moon. Is there somewhere on your site where I can get that information?
Again, thank you for the valuable insights you offer.
