AstroCast: May 20 - 26, 2017

astrocast-headerThe gift of Gemini is emphasized this week with significant solar and lunar events lighting up the pure archetypal form of the sign of the Twins with little interference from other astral sources. The Sun enters Gemini on May 20th and the Moon moves into the sign of the Twins on May 25th, forming the New Moon conjunction with the Sun shortly thereafter. Representing the heart (Sun) and soul (Moon) united in purpose, the New Moon in Gemini may correlate to a heightened sense of curiosity and sharing ideas with others. Not fearing to scratch the surface of virtually anything, Gemini’s answer to “curiosity killed the cat” is “cats have nine lives.” Gemini’s thrive on multiplicity. For example, one woman I know who has Venus in Gemini had four husbands. Another has Gemini ruling the fourth house (which rules the home, among other things). Before she was 18, she had 6 home addresses racked up, and by the time she was 47 had moved on average every three years. A friend with Sun in Gemini literally became the gateway to L.A. for his seemingly endless string of friends who followed him to the land of storytelling (another Gemini specialty) from his Midwest home state.  He hosted them in his home, introduced them to all his dozens of friends, helped them network for jobs in the film industry or its myriad support industries, and was always excited about whatever uniqueness they brought to the dinner party table. Dane Rudhyar invoked the image of a gate in his writing on Gemini, first pointing out that the symbol for Gemini represents the gates of the temple. The two columns represent the polarity of being and they link the roof above and the floor below that represent its threshold. “Gemini is the Gate which leads to the temple of human fulfillment,” says Rudhyar. “At the gate, the disciple pauses, facing the innermost in understanding and expectation.” It is at the gate where Gemini learns “the art of letting things happen.”

So often the Gemini mercurial intellect (its ruler Mercury in full force) rushes into making connections or sharing information without understanding the fullness of what it is doing, and frequently suffers consequences. Witness the current travails of President Trump, who has Sun in Gemini, and the latest of his impulsive information sharing (a quintessential Gemini trait) with Russian diplomats during their recent oval office visit. The challenge is to stand in stillness at the Gate of Gemini, a mystic rectangle shape, to allow the gathering of power into the center of one’s being. “Impatience and the eager rush of desire will only disturb the sacred performance,” says Rudhyar. “This truth is for Gemini to learn; and it, too, must be received as a gift. The heart will understand its meaning only if not rushed into acceptance of its seeming obviousness.  All seeds mature slowly; wisdom and integration are of the nature of seeds.  One must grow into them,” he writes, “effortlessly, serenely, in faith and in beauty.” Perhaps Gemini’s insatiable need to connect to other ultimately represents the movement towards uniting what has split into the duality. The drawing together of our “twin souls,” as represented by connecting to any other being, is to experience the transformative nature of love as the ultimate unifying principle. Two become one at the gate, united by a shared focus on the mysteries. Harmony is restored by the reconciliation of opposites.

Also on May 25th, Venus in Aries squares Pluto in Capricorn, an intense alignment that may correlate to a compelling desire to relate to another. With this planetary pair’s forceful push to experience the power of love may come a willingness to take the deep dive into whatever psycho-spiritual territory is necessary to navigate the inevitable crisis that arise as a result of such penetration into one’s soul. These words were evoked by a person I know how has Venus square Pluto in her natal chart. She has shared experiences of this very nature she had over the course of several relationships. Over time, she was able to bore through the layers of ego, her own as well as her partner’s, at the risk of raw exposure and vulnerability to the symbolic death of a way of being that did not serve her higher purpose. The treasure on the other side of this tremendous effort, however, was a transformation into an increasingly egoless state that has the ability to love more authentically than can be imagined, a state that produced the courage to be radiantly beautiful and powerful from the core of her being.

Here’s the data (using Pacific Time and planetary positions rounded to the nearest whole degree, unless otherwise noted):

May 20 – Sun at 0° Gemini at 1:31 p.m.

May 25 – Venus square Pluto at 19° Aries/Capricorn at 9:19 a.m.

May 25 – Moon conjunct Sun at 5° Gemini at 12:44 p.m.
