Free “Introduction To Astrology” Lecture
To Be Announced
The history of astrology is as ancient as that of humanity. Mankind has observed the planets and stars for all of our recorded history. This means that it isn’t surprising to learn that the growth of astrology mirrors the historical and philosophical developments of mankind in general.
It is unfortunate that the way astrology has been presented to the world for a long time is that of ‘entertainment purposes only.’ We see daily horoscopes by Sun sign in the newspapers and yearly forecasts also by Sun sign in books. This has given rise to significant misunderstandings of the usefulness of astrology.
This lecture will go into some of the specific misunderstandings many people have about astrology and how learning more about this ancient art and science is beneficial and lots of fun too. I will trace how the development of psychology, which began only 150 years ago, has influenced the ways in which astrology is used, and also how the ‘60’s brought about the beginning of an enormous revolution in astrology.
It was at this time that astrology began to go beyond just prediction and the notion that we are fated to have certain things happen to us while simultaneously also believing that other things cannot happen to us, no matter how hard we try. What is replacing this ‘event-centered’ orientation is what Dane Rudhyar called humanistic (or transpersonal) astrology, which tells us that our consciousness does matter. We can discover that as we become more aware of our nature, we can also become empowered to participate in the creation of a positive destiny along with the many forces that influence us from birth to death.
As we discover the wonders of astrology, we can experience a “reorientation of consciousness.” We see that we are neither pawns in an impersonal universe nor totally free to do anything we want to do. Instead we can learn that the study and use of astrology can be considered to be a ‘karma yoga,’ where our life is an opportunity to learn what our is ‘dharma’ or ‘our life purpose’. This includes discovering what is in the way for us to fully embrace this way of life. Astrology is a tool for Self-discovery and Self-awareness.
