This article is written by Perry Baker, a graduate of the Institute. We hope you enjoy it.

I would like to offer some missing explanations to keywords that are bandied about concerning Taurus. The words are accurate but at times, seem out of context which suggests that we need to take a deeper look at what they really mean. Let’s start with the term ‘sentimental.’ We bulls are definitely that… and I would say that it comes from an odd side of Venus, which rules Taurus. We have an innate recognition of beauty, but that recognition is of the intention, time and craftsmanship that went into creating the object of our adoration, including people. In a way, the feelings evoked are an honoring of the effort invested in its creation. We do not take for granted the efforts made in the act of creation and value this more than anything else.

Next let’s look at the attribute of ‘stubbornness.’ Ah yes the quintessential Taurean descriptive word. We bulls don’t like moving off our dung heap. We don’t do this just to be obstinate. We are salt of the Earth types. We know that fads come and go like the seasons and times that bred them. We have seen the things that last through the ages and they all had an intention to last. They were built for the generations to enjoy. Fads usually have the intention of greed, never intending to go the distance.  When you see us resist change it comes from the sadness created by half hearted ideas and plans that are merely a waste of precious resources, Our Mother pillaged to fill the pockets of a few.

Now let’s look at the characteristic of ‘slowness.’ The previous word has something to do with this one. Both are a continuation of the same theme. Bulls are slow, and for a great reason. There exists in life a level of detail that is wasted on most. What didn’t you see as you drove down the street at speed? Did you miss the bee pollinating the rose or the grasshopper eating grass? Bulls know life is a slow cycle that must be taken in the same way. Rash decisions based on haste may not have sufficient time to consider the ramifications of those decisions. Taurus understands that every decision and action affects the next seven generations. The bulls move at a pace appropriate for the weight of the responsibility associated with that decision. Don’t rush us; your life may depend on it.

That takes me to the fourth word, ‘sensitiveness.’ Some of life’s greatest gifts exist in the subtlest levels. I don’t miss many details but it wasn’t until I was dating a Taurus myself that I could see into another level. I think it had something to do with another reflecting exactly my own nature in order for me to truly get this one. Life with her seemed to exist in slow motion under a microscope and it was wonderful. The shape of a fingertip, the color of her eyebrow, the sounds she made as she slept, and the way her mind ruminated on things. This level once uncovered opened vistas I didn’t know existed. Emotional, sensual, spiritual all had their greatest components in this realm. When a bull discovers the access code to this degree of sensitivity it unlocks a compassion that may surprise him. This sensitivity is like being plugged into the environment at a creation level and seeing the interconnectedness of all things.

This brings me to the final word, ‘confidence.’ Maybe you noticed that the above descriptions play integral parts in the Taurean makeup. The theme creates a confidence bred in knowledge of the inner workings of life, of the environment, which a bull finds himself or herself. From the woodlands to Wall Street they are unflappable for they feel connected to the inner workings of life. This is a ‘confidence’ that is earned by participating in direct experiences of life, sensing and appreciating each one and taking nothing for granted. To Taurus, this is the ‘good life.’
